On Friday May 31 2019 I did a self-guided tour of Muhlenberg College. I was impressed by the building's architecture. Every building has a red door. I wondered what the significance of that. I find that college campuses make for interesting photo subjects and Muhlenberg College is no exception.

The only College I know that doesn’t allow for students to live off campus! Living off campus offers a true College experience and it’s mind boggling that the President of this College doesn’t realize that. Don’t waste your money here.

I studied at Muhlenberg College from 1997 to 2000 and graduated with a Liberal Arts BA. The classes were small, and I benefited from the individualized attention and supportive environment of my professors, most of whom I got to know very well. The campus was safe and beautiful, with opportunities for personal individual and group studies, artistic expression, athletics, and extracurriculars, as well as rest and recreation.

However, the MC high tuition put enormous stress on my well-being, as I did not have the benefits of family support, which most others take for granted. The constant threat of being unable to register for the following term and complete my education due to lack of finances became overwhelming. Instead of being able to enjoy and participate in the MC on-campus extracurricular activities, I had to get an out-of-campus job and work. Also, I sold my blood platelets whenever possible. Still, the earned minimum-wage salary and the blood donations cash barely paid for my college textbooks, school supplies, essential life necessities, and the job commute. Unable to make enough money, I resorted to moving out of campus, canceling my meal plan and going hungry, and finishing my MC degree requirements as fast as possible by attending summer sessions, earning credits by direct examination, especially in foreign languages and other skill-based courses, and completing faculty-approved and supervised internship-based research projects. Also, I put off pursuing the much sought-after study abroad college experience and exploring my academic and professional interests until graduate school.

After graduating with a BA from Muhlenberg College, I was awarded academic merit scholarships and research fellowships by Harvard University Faculty of Arts and Sciences and Harvard Medical School. This financial aid allowed me to fully devote myself to the HU's challenging medical science curriculum, MSF volunteer service, and other extracurriculars, free of the previously ever-present stresses of being unable to register for the following term and finish my studies due to lack of finances.

I became a multidisciplinary research scientist and professor with academic appointments spanning the US, EU, and Asia. As an educator and research scholar, I now design courses and teach all who have the necessary talents, dedication, perseverance, and potential to succeed, regardless of their financial status. This professional and ethical responsibility is not making me poor but substantially enriches and benefits my professional career and personal life. It allows me to shape the success of my students, which reciprocally shapes my success.

Great liberal arts college with a beautiful, walkable campus. I've been on campus three years in a row at the student union for an unrelated event and enjoyed the many advantages of the campus as a senior adult. Students will like the food. And I hope the education.
